TOURIST INFORMATION |
CALPE |
|
|
The municipal district of
Calpe extends around a bay which is closed at the
northern end by the rocky headland known as the Peñon de Ifach,
which is the symbol of the Costa Blanca and has been declared a Natural
Park. Calpe is surprising in its contrasts: sea and hills, fishing
village and modern town. It is a pleasure to stroll around its old
town, with its typical streets of fishermen's houses and fresco paintings;
to climb up to the 8th-century chapel of San Salvador; and to visit
the harbour in the afternoon to watch the arrival of the fishing fleet
and the fish auctions in the Lonja.
In Calpe all kinds of nautical and mountain sports can be practised,
including rock-climbing in Ifach and Toix, and caving in Olta. The
town also offers its excellent cuisine, based mainly on fish and rice
dishes.
